So here we are. The world didn't end in 2012 and we have that collective post Christmas weeble like feeling.
The gym kit is being dragged out of the wardrobe, you realise you didn't deodorise your trainers and the January fitness frenzy is about to commence.
So what do we do now?.
For many of you dedicated gym rats, your goals for 2013 are already outlined. Not much has changed and you pretty much know where you're headed.
But what about the people who have decided to make the commitment to a new healthier lifestyle?. How many of them actually have a goal, other than " I want to lose weight & get fit"?
I can probably safely say none.
I want to lose weight & get fit is too general. How are you going to measure it. Ok there are scales. These are the most misleading piece of equipment you could ever own.
Muscle pound for pound has about half the volume of fat. Its denser. If you nail your diet & hit the gym there is every chance you could PUT ON weight BUT lose volume.
So you weigh yourself & panic ...
How are you going to measure your fitness? ok you could do all the tests etc but lest face it most people don't have access to that sort of equipment. Unless you have a PT there is no yardstick you are going to be given. If you attend classes, it will probably be measured by the fact you managed to complete the class without having a heart attack.
The problem is with this, is that as you get fitter, you will also work harder, so you will still feel buggered when you get to the end.
So I say to you...Give yourself a specific goal
Do you want to know what mine was for 2012?
I wanted to be able to do a hanging pull up with good form and a handstand push up with good form.
It was that simple.
So in order to achieve this I had to train. Build the strength in my back & shoulders and not by half measures. No Pussy Press ups for me. And do you know what? I got there!
The by product of this goal is that, my upper body strength has improved and I now do push ups with style. Not that girlie, wobbly, meh type of push up, but powerful and strong MAN pushups. I have better form with weights.
Plus pulling off a good pull up in the gym is bloody AWESOME!
