Except some of you have now entered a new world. A place where the alter is the bench. The position of worship is the squat and your reward? DOMS from hell.
Oh & just quickly for those that aren't familiar with the term. D.elayed, O.nset, M.uscle, S.oreness or DOMS as they are more commonly abbreviated to is the pain and stiffness felt in muscle several hours to days after unaccustomed or strenuous exercise. The soreness is felt most strongly 24 to 72 hours after the exercise. It is caused by eccentric exercise. After such exercise, the muscle adapts rapidly to prevent muscle damage, and thereby soreness, if the exercise is repeated.
Delayed onset muscle soreness is one symptom of exercise-induced muscle damage. The other is acute muscle soreness, which appears during and immediately after exercise.
Now that was your little educational bit, I'm sorry but I'm now going to ruin it with a rant.
Yes a rant!
Some of you may be a little offended at the following but all I will say is, I am writing this from a female perspective so please bear this in mind.
I am aware I do use the term meathead a lot. Now I will stress this is not a generic term for large very muscular men. (I happen to quite like large muscular men) Its a term I use for those types that come into my gym and think they bloody own the place.
You know the ones.
Most of them don't train hard, they take 'shortcuts'.
If they did train hard they wouldn't have that shitty kind of attitude because they would appreciate those that do.
They lift weight too heavy for them with bad form. Bang around, make lots of noise and generally get on everyones nerves...
From a female perspective the Gym can be a daunting place, especially if you're on your own. Many women are to be quite frank, scared when they first set foot in the temple of iron.
So imagine this...
I walk into the gym. I have my program in hand and I'm set to go, its not that busy and there is two big guys in the free weight area.
There are two benches free and the cable machine is not being used.
I set my towel and my bottle down & collect the weights I'm going to use. Most of the exercises I'm going to do are super setted push/pull. So I get underway.
I'm fine for about 10 mins, then all of a sudden one of the two aforementioned meatheads jump onto the cable machine. Now this is fine, I'm using the bench but will quickly superset on the cable machine (which I've been doing for the last 10 mins) so I ask him if I can use it whilst he's recovering & time my sets accordingly. The answer?
Yes you've guessed it
"No!. My mate is using it then."

I felt a little annoyed because I'm nearly finished but fair do's, I wasn't using it at that particular time. So I adapt what I'm doing and carry on.
Now for the bit that made my blood boil. His mate never went on the machine & he spent half the time texting on his phone. Plus he kept looking at me with that arrogant, what you going to do about it kind of attitude.
To make matters worse, he wasn't even working hard when he was on it.
Its this kind of arrogance that really puts women off using the gym. I appreciate that sometimes equipment is going to be used. You can't always go on the things you want when you want. But He was just being a 'MeatHead'.
I've been in gyms where there are 'Men only' corners where no woman is allowed to set foot... I'm not kidding!
Ive also been physically pushed out of the way of a pull up bar that I was using, so a meathead could throw out a few.
The collective gasp from the regulars at this particular display of testosterone fueled stupidity was actually audible.

This is one of the reasons why womens gyms are springing up, to stop this feeling of being threatened. Its a sad state of affairs, why can't men & women train together?
Now to be fair a lot of the guys who come in are real Gents. They are well mannered and have respect. These are the guys who know how hard it is for women & don't feel the need to take their ego's into the gym with them
To you chaps I say an enormous thank you
To all the Meatheads I say
